Thoughts

Last night Aaron and I were able to go to a Bible study with some friends and it was just what I needed. Our discussion was originally about the subject of power over sin. It is a very good topic that is not talked about enough. It's as if we don't want to admit to the sin that is in our lives and the fact that we struggle with sin even as Christians. I struggle...very much. It is the Holy Spirit, in those who are truly converted, that convicts us of sin. But, what are we to do with that? What are we to do with the temptation to sin? What are we to do with the sin we know we are to put to ? There is a phrase that is used, and I have used it myself..."Let Go and Let God". That is one view on how to deal with temptation and sin in our lives. That we are to give it up to God and he will just take it away...he will deal with it for us. At one time I shared that same view; however, today I do not. After looking at scripture we are shown something different. In 1 Timothy 6:11 tells us "But flee from these things (see vs. 3-10), you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness." In this verse were are told things that we should actively do; we are to "flee from the things" and "pursue" the remaining of the verse. We are to make an effort. We are given the power of the Holy Spirit to help us do these things. Again...active; not passive. John Piper puts it a different way...we are to make war on the sin in our life.
