Endocrin...who?

Yesterday Aaron and I made another trip to Birmingham's Kirkland Clinic to see an endocrinologist. I may have mentioned before that I have hyperthyroidism. My family doctor wanted me to see an endocrinologist to have the input of someone more knowledgeable in this area, due to the other health issues that are going on. This doctor was very good. He took the time to explain what was happening and what the possible resolutions are. He even used the white board that we see in most of the examination rooms at the Kirkland Clinic. So...what is going on? What he said was that based on the information he had, more than likely I have Grave's Disease. There are more tests he wants to do just to make sure. There is something called an Uptake Scan that he would like to have done and I've got to have my family doctor get that scheduled. And, what do we do if it is? If it is then the thyroid would have to be removed either surgically, or by way of medication. The medication used to "dissolve" the thyroid is a type of radioactive iodine. It is an easy option...however; since I've had a few CT scans (done with an iodine contrast) and may be scheduled to have more, the amount of iodine in the medication would not do anything to the thyroid. The next option, and a very do-able one, is to surgically have my thyroid removed. Either way is fine by me. It is depending on how the oncologist wants to move forward. In the meantime, the endocrinologist prescribed some medication that will help with the symptoms I'm having. This means no more hot flashes and night sweats...hopefully.

Thank you for all your prayers and words of encouragement. We really appreciate it.
